Redeeming Ruth 4

Pastor Scott Ross teaches about: Generosity: The Great Hope-Builder, as we continue in our study of Ruth. He reminds us of three key life principles for us to remember: 1. God can redeem your family. 2. You need to demonstrate the kindness (hesed) of God to others in your life out of your abundance. 3. You are to remain in the place where God blesses you.

Pastor Scott Ross teaches on Ruth 2: 1-13. He challenges us to see God’s hidden hand of favor each and every day. Even when things get rough or outright brutal in our lives, God is and always is at work to make things “turn out.”

So I have had this weird habit lately. It is night-time, an hour or so after dinner and I crave a Coke. This is new to me, I normally am not a sugar-laced beverage kind of guy, but something is changing in my taste buds as I race toward pre-middle age.

But the problem is: I can’t have a Coke. I’m on a strict no sugar diet. I could reach for a diet Coke (gross enough) but I can’t have a diet Coke because I want to sleep in a couple of hours and the caffeine will keep me up all night (another pre-middle aged indicator). So I settle for a Caffeine-free diet Coke. The can is so cold, it has a shimmery label reminiscent of the “Real Thing” and my mouth waits in anticipation of this pseudo indulgence. It takes merely one swig however to bring my fantasy to a stretching halt. This is gross. I can never finish the can and it leaves me feeling worse than I did before I cracked the can open.

You see, it has all of the trappings of the “Real Thing” but it is a striped down version devoid of the two things a carbonated beverage requires: sugar and caffeine. It merely leaves me wanting the real deal more desperately.

Do you see similarities to the Christian life? Jesus calls us to a life in love with Him that is nothing less than complete devotion. It seems as though He never called anyone to follow Him without first making sure they knew what the cost would be…it was an all or nothing proposition.

In Luke 9:62 Jesus replied to someone who wanted to put following Him one hundred percent on hold, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus desires that you find abundant and vibrant life in Him. But this is only possible if you make Him your true leader and guide and follow Him with seemingly reckless abandon. Have you felt disappointed? As though the brand of Christianity you’ve been pursuing isn’t the “Real Deal”? Here’s a solution: stop settling for partial Christianity (that’s an oxymoron btw). Like my caffeine-free diet coke, it will never quench the thirst your soul is striving for. Stop settling for anything less than the fullest Christ-centered life!

You need to follow the real Jesus to make it through this life. Will you fall in love with Him? Will you allow Him to lead you? If you do, you will never settle for anything less again.

There is a common motif in literature and film, you know the story: young, poor boy or girl (through a quirky set of circumstances) discovers that he or she is actually of royal book or heir to a largesse or throne. This forces him or her to reshape life around this new identity.

In some ways, that is similar to the process we undergo of embracing our identity in Christ – you are no longer who you were, you are now a child of the King! That is why we are engaged in our current series Discovering my Identity in Christ – this truly is a discovery process.

Today we will re-discover the wonderful truth that, as God’s children, we are loved. Deeply loved. Loved enough that God was willing to die for us. Amazing!

Today, we will look at love from four perspectives:

1. The reciprocal love within the members of the Trinity

2. The love of God expressed toward Mankind

3. Our love for God

4. How to Grow our Love for God

Perspective from Pastor Scott…

I loved it last year when my son PJ (who has played baseball for seemingly eight years now) played catcher for the first time. If you don’tknow, PJ isn’t the biggest kid in the world, or in 5th grade for that matter. To see my little buddy don the massive garb of catcher’s gear was adorable – he was swimming in it. But I was proud of him for being an amazing catcher. You see, having the right equipment is critical for success, but the heart and attitude of the person being equipped is just as important!

It is so important for followers of Christ to understand that they are fully equipped to do the work God is calling them to. That applies to you too! Whatever God calls us to, He knows we will succeed because He has called us to it and will equip us in every necessary way.

Oh, and here’s one more nugget of truth: we cannot stall and wait to move in the direction God is calling us to until we feel fully equipped. You see, God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.

Think about your last name. What meaning does it bring? Are you proud to be a part of your family history or do you try everything you can to avoid being associated with “them”? What abuot the family you’ve married into and perhaps changed your name to when you married your husband? Have you been embraced by this new family?

Well if you are a Christ-follower, your greatest sense of personal identity and history are found in being made a child of the King of Kings! You are now lovingly considered God’s child. Isn’t that amazing? The God of the Universe loves you and considers you His precious child!

We refer to this reality as adoption – God has adopted us into His family. And what a privilege adoption is. It opens the doors to the Kingdom of Heaven to us and grants us all the benefits of being God’s kids. It also changes our relationship to one another, we are now Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

This morning we will look closely at all of the privileges and responsibilities of being adopted into the family of God.

Confidence is fragile, isn’t it? Sometimes it just takes one slip up, one missed free throw, one wrong word and our confidence begins to falter. A great question for us to ask is: where does our confidence come from?

If our confidence comes from within ourselves as many in our culture would want us to believe, then we know we will fail. We can only muster so much confidence in our own abilities.

A Christ-follower sees confidence through a different lens. We know that we are still mired in sinful choices and humanness. Therefore, our confidence doesn’t come through what we can or cannot do on our own, but rather by what Christ can do in and through us. He will never fail us. Through Him, we can conquer everything that life throws at us.

Turn to Jesus and you’ll find confidence today!

Most of us do not often consider the priviledges or responsibilities of citizenship. We seem to take citizenship forgranted. In most cultures around the world throughout time, this was not the case. Citizenship was a highly valued status marker and few ever achieved it. This was the case in the ancient Roman world during which Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians. Today we will take a look at how Paul called the Philippians to live a life not worthy of a citizen on Earth, but in heaven as well.

So how are you living? If you are a Christ follower, you should in some sense stand out as a foreigner on earth. Do you? Have you simply been blending in too much lately?

Let’s take an honest look at the life Paul was calling his audience to strive for and see if there aren’t some areas in our lives that we need to rise above in – to truly find a Life Worth Living.

We all know that words are powerful, and some more than others. Sometimes speaking truth requires great courage. Often many years go by before one finds the courage within to speak the words that come from the heart.

Often the most powerful words are spoken through times of pain. Painful experiences and seasnos elicit powerful words.

Today, we will find the encouragement to speak courageously as we look to the model of Paul who through the worst of times, spoke truth in love and inspired others to do the same – any many lives were changed.

May the courageous words that are stored in our hearts be set free!

Ok, so lets be honest, we are in some pretty tough times in so many ways. The economy as a whole, the local job and housing markets. Families are facing difficult times relationally.

What does God say about facing such times? Fortunately, the Bible doesn’t candy-coat things and tell us to smile and pretend it’s all ok. The Bible makes it clear that we will face times of fear, danger and struggle. What the Bible encourages us to do is face those times with courage – not only the courage to survive or simply endure, but the courage to continue to dream God-sized dreams in the midst of even the darkest days.

In this new series Living the Courageous Life, we will be reminded that the life lived without need of courage is a life not worth living!

What if you lost God? There is one couple in all of human history who can claim to have done just that: Mary and Joseph.

In this message, we will look at the time when Jesus was twelve years old and chose to stay behind in the Temple while His parents returned home from Jerusalem. It took them a day to realize Jesus was not in their company of travelers. Oops!

How many of us mistakenly assume Jesus is in our midst? Perhaps it is time for us to make Jesus the central leader in your life and not assume anything.

We will also see how Jesus was Going to those who were wise and learned, and this led to Him Growing “in wisdom, stature and in favor with God and men”. What great goals for us as well!

There is a very interesting theme that resounds again and again in the Bible, it is this:

The soul is too big for the body

Due to the effects of sin and death entering into humanity, we are in a sense imprisoned in this life within a body that cries out for freedom. Our spirits scream out within us for more of life than we can enjoy or express.

This morning, we will be reminded that Jesus came to set us free. We will look at the very first person Jesus set free, and it might catch you by surprise. It didn”t happen later in his life and ministry, it occurred when he was merely days old.

He set an old man named Simeon free. The beginning of Jesus” life ended Simeon”s wait for the Messiah. Upon seeing and blessing Jesus, he exclaimed that he was at last able to escape the confinement of a life of expectancy.

What goal can you pursue that will bring peace in your life?

Suppose someone makes a promise to you – a really big promise or commitment. Would you believe it? Hard to answer isn’t it, because it depends upon the trustworthiness of the person making the promise. Can you trust them?

What about the promises of God?

As we continue our series Year ONE, we will begin to look at year one of the life of Jesus. Actually we will go even further back than that to look at the promise God made to Mary before the conception of Jesus and a similar promise made to the parents of Jesus’ future cousin John the Baptist.

We will see two huge promises of God, both requiring a miracle. The difference is the response of the person receiving the promise: one responds with doubt; the other with faith. Perhaps we can identify with each response!

Today we will take a close look at the power and authority Jesus had over the spiritual forces that were in opposition to His ministry and the plan of God to reach out into humanity to offer a plan of peace and forgiveness. These enemies of God are demons or fallen angels and their chief is named Satan.
We all have preconceived notions about spiritual beings such as angels and demons. Some of us think of a red devil wielding a trident, or scary little varmints that annoy and pester us. Others yet simply dismiss the entire notion of angels and demons as imagines powers. What matters most of all is what the Bible says about these forces.
Today we will take a look at the grand scheme of things – a close look at the forces at play and the overall strategy of God and why Jesus had to come in power over all spiritual authorities. This topic is actually very important for us and it is critical to truly understand what the Bible says about such things, and center our lives on that truth.

Ponder this reality for a moment: Jesus is in the process of pursuing you! Yes, YOU! It is at time exhilarating, ecouraging and even annoying that God just won’t seem to let go of you. He won’t just leave you be!
Why is that? Because He is passionate about you and knoes that He has made you just the way you are for a distinct and special purpose, but that purpose can only be fulfilled through following HIm. A life lived for any reason other than God’s purposes is empty.
And Jesus knows where your heart is. He knows what you need to hear from Him so that you can turn to Him. We all come to Jesus through different paths, perhaps one of these:
* The SEEKERS: those actively pursuing Jesus for a relationship
* The SOUGHT: those Jesus seems to simply enthrall and compel
* The SKEPTICS: those who come to Jesus with their questions
* The SUCCESSFUL: those who believe they are ok on their own, until they discover that Jesus desires to do much more with their lives
The great news is that Jesus is comfortable connecting with us right where we are. But he won’t call us to stay where we are. No, He calls us to Follow Him in order that we can be used by Him, just as His first followers were.

Have you ever felt a crowd of people turn on you in an instant? Maybe you dropped the big catch in football or baseball, or you knocked over and broke the urn containing Aunt Matilda’s ashes during a Thanksgiving celebration with all the family watching. You know how it feels when they turn against you…cheers into boos.
Well, magnify that by about ten times and you will begin to kinow how it felt for Jesus when He began His ministry. They went from cheering for Him and embracing His teaching, to wanting Him dead and trying to throw Him off a cliff! That’s quite a turn.
The question is: why? The answer is pretty simple, they liked Jesus the person and they could embrace the idea of Him as God, but they didn’t like His plan. They wanted Him all to themselves, but Jesus made it clear He hadn’t come just for them and He hadn’t come for Israel alone. He came to save the world. This concept, they just could not embrace.
The reality is, we all seem to have an idea of who Jesus should be and who He should pursue. But our agenda and His are frequently on different levels. He sees so much more than we do. Let’s look closely at why Jesus came to the world and what His agenda was and see if we can embrace it as well.

In our journey through YEAR 1 of the ministry of Jesus today we will look at the temptaion of Jesus by Satan at the very outset of His ministry. This is a BIG subject that requires us to think very deeply about Jesus and the Incarnation: that is the doctrine that Jesus came as God in the flesh. Here are some important terms of Christian ordering (doctrines) that will help us make sense of this episode.

B.C. (English): “Before Christ”
A.D. (Latin): Anno Domini: “Year of our Lord” (marks the year of Jesus’ birth)

The Council of Chalcedon and the Chalcedonian Creed: A gathering of biblical scholars in the year 451 A.D. Declared that Jesus Christ is one person with two natures (human and divine) and is both fully God and fully man.

Hypostatic Union: Term used to describe the union of Christ’s two natures, Divine and Human in one being. (Hypostasis: the subastance or essential nature of a person)

Impeccability: (Latin) “not able to sin”

In an instant, the world was changed.
Jesus went from obscurity to popularity in one simple act… one action that marked the inauguration of His ministry. That one act was His own baptism and the affirmation of God the Father and Holy Spirit over Him and His ministry.
In this series for us at Impact, we will closely examine the first year of the ministry of Jesus. So many of His great teachings, miracles and conversations occurred at the ouset of His ministry. We will spend a couple of months retracing His footsteps, in order that our own steps might be strengthened.
At the outset today, we will lay the foundation for Jesus’ first year of ministry by looking closely at the man God chose to have prepare the way… John “the Baptist”.

No matter how you look at it, forgiveness is always a painful process, isn’t it? For a number of reasons. First of all, an offense has occurred – someone’s been hurt – and either you were the one who was hurt or you were the offender. Neither of those positions are fun. Both are painful. Because of the pain of going through the process of forgiveness, so many times we just stop short. Perhaps we feel it is easier just to live with the pain rather than walk the path of forgiveness.
The problem is… when forgiveness isn’t accomplished we continue to punish ourselves over and over for something that happened in the past. In a sense, life just comes to a halt. And that is no way to live.
There is a better way. There is a way to find freedom. That is through forgiveness.
Today, we will continue our series called Great Relationships 101 and move to this ever important topic of forgiveness. This will not necessarily be fun, but it will be good. Good for us to listen to God’s voice on the subject.
We will begin by looking one more time to the life of a man named Joseph. Joseph had been wounded by those who should have loved him most. Joseph had many reasons not to forgive. But Joseph rose above it all. Like Jesus, Joseph found that forgiveness is worth the cost. And it is still worth the cost today.

Respect is an important and foundational building block for meaningful relationships. In many ways, respect is the foundation upon which trust can be built. If we do not respect someone, we will never trust them.
Today, we will take a close look at respect and relationships. How we grow and nuture respect. How respect can be won again after it has been lost.
Not surprisingly, as with all other aspects of relationships, the work (and building great relationships is always hard work) begins with ourselves. We must first have a healthy, godly sense of self-respect. Your value as a person isn’t found in anyone else bu the way God values you.
Out of this grows the ability to live a life worth of the respect and honor of others and the ability to entrust others with the gift of your respect.

What does it mean to trust someone? How can I learn to trust again? How can I prove myself trustworthy in the eyes of others?
These are all such big questions and are in fact some of the most significant questions we can ask ourselves. The good news is: there are answers. There are good answers, and they all begin with looking at God.
God actually trusts us! he entrusts us with the work He wants done on earth. He confines hidden truths to us, if we obey His call on our lives. Here’s another perspective we must keep in mind: when we feel as though our trust has been violated; when we feel betrayed, we must keep in mind the reality that Jesus’ trust was violated. Jesus was betrayed. Yet, he forgave and still forgives. He restores trust. Let’s pray that He does all of those amazing works in us today!

One great demonstration of love is sacrifice. We are willing to sacrifice for that which we truly love. How can one say they love another if not willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the other?
The Bible says that the greatest form of love you can show another person is to sacrifice your own life for them. To lay down your life for your brother or sister. Now, of course taken literally, that is an amazing form of sacrifice! But obviously the more common sacrificial demonstrations of love we show are small, daily ones.
Here’s a thought: Love is only as great as the price we are willing to pay for it, or as deep as the sacrifices we are willing to make to nuture it or demonstrate it.
The same is definitely true in regards to our relationship with God. We both make sacrifices as a demonstration of our love. God has made the ultimate sacrificial expression of His love for you… He died for you… He died your death… that you can be made truly alive! That is the greatest sacrificial act of love in history!
In the same way, we should be prepared to make great sacrifices for God as He asks us to. In fact, the Bible says that worship is sacrifice. It costs us something. No, not necessarily our money… don’t get that wrong. But it will cost you something that competes with God for your time, affections and attention. Today, we will look at one of the greatest stories of a willingness to sacrifice the greatest of all treasures for God… Abraham and his son Isaac.

There is one certainty about your life: change is inevitable. Most significant changes in our lives are either unexpected or beyond our ability to fully prepare for – no matter how hard we try. Changes can be thrilling and adventuresome, or they can be dreadful and exhausting.
The way we face major changes in our lives might demonstrate our faith and trust in God’s hand guiding us. We might ask ourselves, “is God in this change?” Or, “God, is this your will for my life? Is this your idea for my life or is this my own desire?” Very good questions!
Today, we will look at the great reunion between a father (Jacob) and his son (Joseph) after over 20 years of separation. But before the two could meet, Jacob (father) would have to be willing to take his family through a gigantic life-change: they would have to pack everything they have up, and uproot from the land of their fathers and move to Egypt.
In this, Jacob serves as a great model for us in trusting God through major life changes. Jacob sought God’s blessing on the changes and then once that was received, he moved forward with faith and in confidence. What a great example for us!

Is it possible to simply “forgive and forget”? Is that even wise?
In our penultimate survey today of the life of Joseph, we will see that reconciliation (the act of restoring a relationship that has been severed or distanced by conflict or betrayal) is not as simple as pretending the pain of the past never happened. That is not only impossible, it wouldn’t be healthy.
Joseph demonstrates instead that it is wise to test the genuineness of the other person with whom you are reconciling. Joseph tests his brothers’ hearts to see if they have really changed over the years. Will they pass the test? Will he take the very brave step of reaching out to them and reconciling?
Hold on to your seats for another amazing journey alongside this man of amazing integrity and faithfulness. Perhaps God will teach us a thing or two about reconciling a troubled relationship in our lives.

In every good story, there is a crisis. A villain arrives or disaster strikes – but the hero rises above it all in the end. There is a “then one day” moment when it all begins to come together and things change for the better.
Joseph had his “then one day”: in the course of one day he went from being a prisoner in the pit to the king's right-hand man. What is so exciting about his journey is that when his moment finally came after years of waiting in isolation he was ready to seize they day.
One question we have to ask is: “Why did God put Joseph through the many years of pain and loneliness?” The best answer appears to be that while Joseph was waiting, God was working. And before Joseph could achieve the success God had in store for him, God had to teach Joseph a number of lessons that could only be learned through trails and pain.
What about your life? Are you willing to have your character shaped by the painful years? And when you “one day” comes, will you be ready to seize the day and realize the dreams God has placed in your heart?
